Common Causes Of Kitchen Stoppages

June 29, 2015/ 0

At Jack Stephan, our Orange County and Los Angeles plumbers know that kitchen stoppages are one of the most common and easily avoided plumbing mishaps. As a result, we have compiled a list of the most ordinary backup culprits to inform our customers on how they can avoid these annoying occurrences.

All in all, there are several things that can cause a clogged sink. Kitchen sink clogs are often caused by liquid fat such as oil and grease. This liquid fat is emulsified by water allowing fatty deposits to form along the walls of the pipes and causing the flow of water to slow. Therefore, you should never pour grease or oil down the sink, and you should also avoid putting any meat fat or gristle down the drain.

Additionally, eggshells and coffee grinds can cause stoppages along with vegetable peelings and fruit rinds. As a result, our Orange County and Los Angeles plumbers highly advise customers not to place lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, watermelon, honeydew, or cantaloupe rinds down the disposal. Likewise, potato, carrot, asparagus, celery and yam peels should also be avoided along with other items similar in consistency.

Also, we encourage our customers to keep in mind that dishwashers can also lead to sink backups. The kitchen sink and dishwasher use the same drain line. That is why it is recommended that you remove any excess food particles from your dishes prior to placing them inside the dishwasher.

Fortunately, there are things you can do in order to prevent your sink from getting clogged. If you have a garbage disposal, then you should avoid putting large amounts of food in it at one time. We also recommend letting water run while you are using the disposal in order to prevent build up in the pipes and allowing the disposal to run a reasonably necessary amount of time to breakup particles.

If you do find yourself experiencing a stoppage, then an Orange County or Los Angeles plumber from Jack Stephan can be sure to help. We are happy to guarantee all of our parts and labor, which gives our customers confidence in knowing that repairs performed by an Orange County or Los Angeles plumber from us will last.
