Choosing The Right Plunger

July 2, 2015/ 0

Imagine for a moment that your toilet’s stopped up. You reach for the nearest plunger, and in a minute or two, the clog is gone. Nice story, but our Orange County and Los Angeles plumbers know that it doesn’t always happen that way.

There are three basic types of household plungers, and each are used for a different purpose. Use the wrong plunger, and you may find yourself frustrated. The three types of plungers are as follows:

Standard Cup Plunger

This is the type of plumbing tool that most people envision when they think of a plunger. Typically made with a red rubber suction cup attached to a wooden handle, a standard cup plunger is the right tool for unclogging sinks and shower drains. Standard cup plungers are available with long or short handles.

Flange Plunger

A flanged plunger is right for clearing toilet clogs. When inserted into a toilet bowl, the flanged end creates a strong vacuum seal. This seal allows the plunger to force many types of clogs down and through the toilet pipes. The flange on some plungers can be inverted for use as a cup plunger.

Accordion Plunger

By far the strongest kind of household plunger, an accordion plunger can provide more toilet-clearing force than a flanged or cup plunger but may not create a proper seal. Most Orange County and Los Angeles plumbers recommend using a regular flanged plunger to clear toilet clogs.
